露天种植的西瓜没有任何防护设施。 “清明前后，种瓜种豆。”到了播种季节，休息了一整个冬天的人们也开始忙碌起来。种植西瓜要选择土质疏松、排水良好的沙质、肥沃的土壤。西瓜喜干旱，怕涝。不宜连续种植西瓜。应选择4至5年未种植瓜果的地块。
为保证稳产高产，必须施足底肥：每亩施土肥23立方米，均匀施，重施钾肥，每亩施钾肥15公斤，二铵70公斤。钾肥使西瓜更甜、更大。瓜田必须深耕，耕前要喷洒防治地老虎、西瓜蛆等地下害虫的农药，防止虫害西瓜苗根部。
现在，人们一般购买西瓜苗，铺好地膜后直接移栽，非常方便。苗穴采用人工挖，穴深8厘米，穴距50厘米。每亩地约需苗木500株。西瓜苗移栽前，应将根部浸入生根剂，以保证不返苗。现在人们一般在放苗后将生根剂掺入灌根水中，比较方便。西瓜苗浇水后，及时覆土，封苗，防止营养碗内的水分蒸发，并保证膜内温度，促进西瓜苗正常生长。
这样，西瓜苗就栽好了。种植西瓜种子比以前更简单、更容易。秧苗饱满健壮，产量较高。
